2016 GARDENING SEMINAR AND LUNCHEON - Gaylord, Michigan

Kick cabin fever and join over 100 other gardeners for this day-long series of gardening presentations and more sponsored by the Alpine Master Gardener Association (AMGA).

You'll enjoy a full day of gardening presentations a delicious lunch  of pesto chicken with parmesan risotto, garden-related vendors, door prizes and plenty of cross pollinating with other gardeners.

The seminar is open to the public and all levels of gardeners, from beginners to experienced, are encouraged to attend. Early bird registration is $35 thru February 22, 2016. After this date, regular registration is $45. Pre-registration is required.

The seminar features two extremely knowledgeable speakers from the Midland Dow Gardens: Elly Maxwell, entomologist and Chuck Martin, senior horticulturist and garden journalist for the Midland Daily News. They will be presenting on the following topics:

Planting for Pollinators - Learn to appreciate all the work insects, primarily bees, do for our garden. We'll focus on the components necessary in a backyard garden to encourage these beneficial insects.

Cultural Practices in Pest Management - Location, watering, fertilizing, pruning and planting can all influence how diseases affect the health of a plant. Find out how pesticides can be reduced in your garden through the way you cultivate your plants.

Michigan's Spring Wildflowers - Learn and revisit our wide diversity of wildflowers that help make our state unique.

Phenology: Understanding Mother Nature's Calendar - Phenology is defined as the scientific study of recurring biological events, and can work as an indicator in our own backyards to time planting, pesticide treatments, pruning, and other garden activities. Rather than following a calendar to predict the best timing of these actions, learn to take cues from mother nature for proper timing.

Location:  Treetops Resort (the Oak Room of the Treetops Lodge), 3962 Wilkinson Rd. in Gaylord. Treetops Resort is the venue sponsor for this event.
